Pondering the deeper truth

We’re sitting in the cabin, swatting mosquitoes, eating barbequed elk burgers, and contemplating what it means to be here, alone in the wilderness. What defines us, now that all those things have been stripped away?

“I’m not sure I know the answer to that question,” says Lewis, “although maybe I’ll discover it here.”

“Well, it would be good to not just be a reaction to what’s happening,” I say. So far, I feel that that’s exactly what I’ve been—an emotional reaction to what appears to be a disastrous situation. We could get great mileage out of that at dinner parties, rolling our eyes and giving dramatic accounts of that dreadful time in Horsefly—when we were devoured from head to toe by hordes of savage mosquitos (and only our eyeballs were spared), bitten so badly by monstrous spiders that we could hardly walk, got stranded in the woodshed in the middle of a force-10 gale, had to evacuate to the village church when a wildfire threatened to consume all our worldly possessions, couldn’t reach civilization when the road got flooded under six feet of water, had to scare off a cougar on the lawnmower (I had no idea that cougars knew how to use those things), and couldn’t get the bear cubs off my trampoline so I could use it. Okay, so we’d have to take a bit of dramatic licence to make it worth the telling, but I don’t think that’s why we’re here.

“If everything we do is gone, as well as all the platforms for doing what we usually do, we’re left with a void that must be filled in some other way,” I say. “So it’s an opportunity to step into that and choose who we want to be, isn’t it?”

We can impose our own positive spin on things and let that define us and our world.

I think of the principles of quantum physics that we’ve been reading about, and I know they apply here as much as everywhere else. It’s time to be defined by a vision of the future, says Dispenza, instead of the memories of the past. That’s it, in a nutshell. Regardless of what’s in front of us now, we must invent a new future for ourselves, in our minds, while fuelling it with excited anticipation and gratitude for how amazing it is (out there in the quantum field). We must be greater than our environment, as Dispenza says, and greater than time, which means that we must be ahead of our time.

Being here is challenging us to creatively step into our gifts and really use them. It’s also an opportunity to strip away who we used to be, and then come forward from a new place, building something on a cleaner foundation. I think of the wooden houses in Western Canada—houses that seem to be built in a matter of weeks—versus the solid brick or concrete houses found in Ireland and other parts of Europe. In Vancouver, we often witnessed older wooden houses being stripped down to their wooden skeletons and then covered up again with a new exterior.
